Jesse Chavez went for a complete game for the A’s as they were cruising against the White Sox. Suddenly the wheels came off.
Jose Abreu’s homer knocked out Chavez. In came Fernando Abad, who walked the only batter he faced.
In came Jim Johnson to close. He let up a Dayan Viciedo double and an Alexi Ramirez single. Suddenly a 5-1 laugher was a 5-3 nail biter with the tying runs aboard and nobody out.
I am not exactly sure what Sean Doolittle was doing all game. When it was 5-1 in the 9th and two other pitchers warming up, but I am going to bet he didn’t think he was going to be thrown into the firestorm.
In he came. He had to face Paul Konerko, always an easy task for a left handed pitcher. He got him to fly out. Sure it scored a run, but now the double play was in order.
Oh wait! Ramirez stole second. No double play for you.
So what did Doolittle do? He struck out Tyler Flowers. Then he faced Leury Garcia and struck him out too.
Game over and Doolittle screamed… something. Not sure what. I’ll find that out. But DAMN that was a bad ass piece of relieving.
That was a dodged bullet a la Keanu Reeves ducking shots in The Matrix.
Time to update the Dodged Bullet – Teeth Grinder Tally.
