“The Joba Face” moves to Detroit

He is no longer wearing a Yankee uniform. He now has a big ole beard. But Joba Chamberlain is still the same guy. He will still let up the big home run and give that face that just says “Oh boy… this sucks.”

Joba came in to close out in lieu of Joe Nathan and he gave the Red Sox a nice reminder of the old days.

With the Red Sox stranding a 25 man roster of runners on base, this looked like an easy Tigers sweep. But then Joba turned back the clock with David Ortiz and suddenly a Tiger lead turned into a Sox advantage with Koji on the mound.

The losing streak is mercifully over. Hey! Time for ANOTHER 7 game winning streak.

Meanwhile the Giants survive a pair of Curtis Granderson homers and the A’s were only threatened by flying bats.

Time to update the Dodged Bullet/Teeth Grinder tally.

It is feeling like an even year for the Giants

The 2010’s are unfolding in an easy to predict manner for the Giants.

2010, they had a magical season, took the division, made it to the NLCS, stunned the Phillies and won it all.

2011, injuries derailed hopes for a repeat.

2012, they passed the Dodgers, won dramatic game after dramatic game, stunned the defending champion Cardinals and swept the Tigers to win it all again.

2013, injuries and a disastrous middle of the season made it a lost year.

Now in 2014, they can’t be beaten. Even a game like tonight when they were down 4-1 and looking dead… losing in the 9th inning… Giants find a way to win. All the games that were ending badly last year are turning into walk off wins, like tonight with Pence’s tying double and Morse’s game ender.

The Giants have 41 wins. No other team in baseball has 40.

The Giants are ahead 10 games in the loss column against Los Angeles with 100 games left to play. Will the Dodgers play 11 games better than the Giants over these last 100 games? If not, then the Giants will win the Division.

And you know what happens during even number years for the Giants in the post season!

Meanwhile the nominal defending champion Red Sox are doing what the Giants did last year: Flounder in the middle months. The A’s lost but pay it no mind.

Time to update the Dodged Bullet/Teeth Grinder tally.

At what point do we declare the Red Sox no longer contenders?

They need to be at .500 by the 4th of July.
