Curt Schilling and I may not see eye to eye on many things. But I do think his Hall of Fame candidacy should be debated and his politics should stay out of it.
Opinions versus stats are debated on this episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.
Today’s card is of Rafael Palmeiro, a man with 3,000 hits, 500 home runs and virtually no support to get into the Hall of Fame.
No player in history, save for McGwire and Canseco, were a more obvious PED user. He went from being a solid line drive in the gap hitter with the Cubs to becoming a 500 home run club member in Texas, bulking up and playing with Canseco.
It is a shame his legacy will be of someone who got caught and wagging his finger at Congress during the PED hearings. He was a tremendous player who had a fine career. Would he have even sniffed Hall of Fame numbers without PEDs? Is there any way to know for sure?
Alas, history will inevitably be unkind to a devastating left handed power hitter who players a very long time and kept switching places with Will Clark wherever he went.
This Topps series was an odd one. Like all things from the 1990’s, there was a questionable color palette.
But also the back of the card was vertical instead of horizontal, making the font on the teams and stats too small. Someone at Topps tried to shake things up that year. No need to shake up what has worked for generations. Print the stats vertically!
