In 2019, I introduced The Summer Score to create a new metric and quantify how many days a team gave their fan base a reason to be excited during the summer months.
In the end, I believe that is what a baseball team owes their fans… a fun summer.
Last year, nothing about the summer was fun and the idea of tabulating the Summer Score in a shortened season and extended playoffs seemed foolish. But this year, we are back to a 162 game schedule.
Here is how The Summer Score works.
Starting today, if a team is in a playoff spot, even for only one day, they increase their Summer Score. I will note when the first day after Memorial Day their fans will wake up with their team a playoff team and bookend it with the last day in case they fall out.
But as the excitement for a playoff spot increases as the post season looms closer, the number of daily points increase later in the year.
BETWEEN THE END OF MEMORIAL DAY and JUNE 30 each day in a playoff spot is worth ONE (1) POINT
BETWEEN JULY 1 and JULY 31 each day in a playoff spot is worth TWO (2) POINTS
BETWEEN AUGUST 1 and AUGUST 31 each day in a playoff spot is worth THREE (3) POINTS
BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 1 and THE LAST GAME OF THE SEASON each day in a playoff spot is worth FOUR (4) POINTS
And this year I am adding to September. Every day a team is just 1 game or 1/2 a game out, that will be worth ONE (1) POINT.
And to clarify, points are added to Division Leaders and Wild Card Leaders. Being tied for a playoff spot counts.
Earning Full WOBs on May 30, 2021 Charlie Blackmon reacked base 4 times, scoring two runs and driving in 2 to help the Rockies break a losing streak and top Pittsburgh, 4-3.

Brandon Woodruff pitched 7 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits while striking out 10 as the Brewers blanked the Nationals, 3-0.
Mike Zunino homered and added another hit as the red hot Rays won again, 6-2 over Philadelphia. Earning ½ WOBs on May 30, 2021 Dylan Carlson singled and homered but the Cardinals fell to Arizona, 9-2.
Aaron Civale went 6 innings but took the hard luck 4-1 defeat for Cleveland by Toronto.

Max Scherzer was solid over 6 innings, fanning 10 Brewers but his Nationals were shutout 3-0.
