The Summer Score – Tally Updated for May 31, 2022

Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post

Memorial Day has come and gone and it is time to start tallying The Summer Score.

Starting today, if a team is in a playoff spot, even for only one day, they increase their Summer Score. I will note when the first day after Memorial Day their fans will wake up with their team a playoff team and bookend it with the last day in case they fall out.

But as the excitement for a playoff spot increases as the post season looms closer, the number of daily points increase later in the year.

BETWEEN THE END OF MEMORIAL DAY and JUNE 30 each day in a playoff spot is worth

BETWEEN JULY 1 and JULY 31 each day in a playoff spot is worth

BETWEEN AUGUST 1 and AUGUST 31 each day in a playoff spot is worth

BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 1 and THE LAST GAME OF THE SEASON each day in a playoff spot is worth FOUR (4) POINTS

And as we did last year I am adding to September. Every day a team is just 1 game or 1/2 a game out, that will be worth ONE (1) POINT.

And to clarify, points are added to Division Leaders and Wild Card Leaders. Being tied for a playoff spot counts.

And with 3 Wild Card spots, more teams can increase their Summer Score.

On this first day, the Astros, Angels, Blue Jays, Rays, Twins and Yankees add to their summer score in the American League.

The Brewers, Cardinals, Dodgers, Giants Mets and Padres all added from the National League.
